Within the workplace a business has a requirement to identify, evaluate and control risks that are likely to result in injury, illness or lost time. The way in the UK, that risk is managed is by carrying out a risk assessment process.
There are six principles of accident prevention published in 1956, which still apply today:
- Accident prevention is an essential part of good management and of good workmanship.
- Management and workers must co-operate wholeheartedly in securing freedom from accidents.
- Senior management must take the lead in organising safety in the workplace
- There must be a definite and known safety policy in each workplace.
- The organisation and resources necessary to carry out the safety policy must exist.
- The best available knowledge and methods must be applied.
By undertaking a risk assessment training course you are acquiring the knowledge and skills to have an understanding of and/or undertake risk assessments in your workplace.
European Union as well as UK legislation require that organisations have carried out risk assessments in their workplace.
A risk assessment is nothing more than a careful examination of what, in your work, could cause harm to people, so that you can weigh up whether you have taken enough precautions or should do more to prevent harm. Risk assessment is the methodology that underpins all decisions about health and safety.
There are two risk assessment courses that can be undertaken
A level 2 qualification is a 1 day risk assessment course and gives delegates an understanding of the risk assessment process, its full title is the called principles of risk assessment and is suitable for anyone who requires an understanding of the risk assessment process.
There is also a level 3 qualification which lasts 3 days and gives delegates both an understanding of the risk assessment process and also the skills necessary to go out and carry out risk assessments in their workplace provided they have the relevant technical knowledge. The full title for this qualification is the Principles and practice of risk assessment.
The two courses can be taken either through an accredited route with an awarding body, or alternatively they can be certificated through GK.
