Asthma deaths – Asthma is caused by inflammation of the airways. These are the small tubes, called bronchi, which carry air in and out of the lungs. If you have asthma, the bronchi will be inflamed and more sensitive than normal.
When you come into contact with something that irritates your lungs, known as a trigger, your airways become narrow, the muscles around them tighten and there is an increase in the production of sticky mucus (phlegm).
Asthma UK is supporting a new group in parliament (the All Party Parliamentary Group on Respiratory Health) that is investigating why so many people in the UK are still dying from lung conditions such as asthma. Respiratory disease affects one in five people in the UK and three people die from asthma every day.
Can you help Asthma UK today by asking your MP to get involved in this life saving project?
Asthma UK are bringing together MPs and Peers with an interest in respiratory health. As part of their Stop Asthma Deaths campaign, they are working with the British Lung Foundation to support this group.
The MPs will present their findings in Parliament and to the NHS; asking the decision-makers to take action to stop people dying from respiratory conditions.
With your help, they can give asthma a stronger voice in Parliament by increasing the membership of the group. Please click on the link to go to the help stop asthma deaths page from Asthma UK and send their prepared letter to your local MP, encouraging them to attend the next meeting and join the group.
